working memory - Baddeley and hitch Flashcards
define working memory
preferred idea for short term memory
system that works with the information we are aware of at any given time
involves conscious, active processing of incoming auditory and visual-spatial information and/or info retrieved form LTM e.g. the manipulation of information
define central executive
directs attention to relevant information and suppresses irrelevant info therefore responsible for coordination slave systems and organising information
- attend to only a limited number of things at a time
- coordinating slave system and integrating with the three cognitive challenging tasks
define phonological loop
stores and processes the sounds of language (phonological information) and rehearses it silently
- important for storing and processing language
define articulatory control system under phonological loop
ability to produce speech
define phonological store under phonological loop
ability to process speech
define visuo-spatial sketchpad
stores visual and spatial information e.g. images, maps, shapes and constructs and manipulate visual images
- stores visual info constructing and manipulating visual shapes
define episodic buffer
links info across domains to form integrates units of visual, spatial and verbal info with time such as the memory of a story or movie - creates episodes or chunks of memory
strengths of working memory model
- can explain parallel processing (multitasking) where the tasks use different stores
weakness of working memory model
- central executive is difficult to quantify
- research is lab based - lacks ecological validity
