process of memory Flashcards
what is memory
process by which we encode, store and retrieve information.
list the process of memory
- encoding
- storage
- retrieval
describe the processes of memory
- encoding (get info into the brain) - transforming information into mental representations. its the processing of info into the memory system by extracting meaning
- storage (retain information) - the retention of encoded information over time
- retrieval (get information back out) - the process of getting information out of memory storage
define encoding
the conversion of sensory info into a form that can be processed by the brain. we do this by encoding information through meaning, images or organisations
types of encoding
visual encoding
acoustic encoding
semantic encoding
describe the types of encoding
visual encoding - encoding of picture images
acoustic encoding - encoding of sounds, especially the sound of words
semantic encoding - encoding the meaning, including the meaning of words
define storage
the retention of the information. storage occurs through the cast network of neurons. memories are linked through neural connections and entworks which help to retrieve information
define retrieval
the recovery of information stored in the brain.
- central to memory
- if you cant retrieve a memory then there is no evidence it exists
