Work Study Flashcards
Work Study
The analysis of work processes and activity. It aims to identify efficiencies that better utilise resources
Layout
The physical arrangement used in the workplace. An inefficient layout will disrupt the flow of work, cause delays and waste resources
Maximising flow
The more efficient the flow, the shorter the distance that materials will travel and the faster the production process will be
Process maps
May be used to represent layouts and flows diagrammatically
Process layouts
Operations of a similar nature are grouped together. Flow patterns may be complex as different products may require different processes at different times
Fixed layouts
Either a product is too large or heavy to make, or a sophisticated production environment is required
Cellular layout
Machines for the production of similar items are located together in a cell.
Workers are cross trained so that they can perform all of the tasks in that cell
Product layout
Machines/equipment are positioned so that each product follows a pre-arranged route through a series of process.
The line of the process is clear, predictable and easy to control.
Level capacity strategies (capacity)
Maintain activity at a constant level over the planning period, including fluctuations in forecast demand.
A problem may arise where stock accumulates ahead of increases in future demands.
Chase demand strategies (capacity)
An attempt is made to match production capability as closely as possible to forecast demand
Demand management strategies (capacity)
Attempt to manipulate demand levels e.g. off peak trains
