Technology in the production process Flashcards
CAM
Computer Aided Manufacturing
Computer Aided Manufacturing
The use of computer software to facilitate and automate manufacturing processes. Considered the successor to the earlier CAE (Computer Aided Engineering)
CIM
Computer Integrated Manufacturing
Computer Integrated Manufacturing
Systems involve the whole production process being controlled by a computer system.
FSM
Flexible Manufacturing System
Flexible Manufacturing System
Integrated, automated manufacturing systems capable of producing a range of products and switching quickly between them. Particularly useful where a company produces a wide range of products. This provides economy of scope.
CNC
Computer Numerical Control
Computer Numerical Control
The control of a particular machine being controlled by a computer system, often used in conjunction with CAD. (Computer Aided Design)
Robots
Machines that do work that is considered similar to the work of people. Common in the motor industry on the assembly lines.
AGV
Automated Guided Vehicles
Automated Guided Vehicles
Automated transport systems using unmanned vehicles. They require no human input (Some consider AGV as a type of robot).
DSS
Decision Support Systems
Decision Support Systems
Analyse and condense large volumes of data into a form that enables managers to to use for decision making, allowing them to consider a number of alternatives and evaluate them under a variety of potential conditions.
Expert Systems
A specific type of DSS that capture, store and analyse expert knowledge and information.
