Heart and blood pressure

A

Normal adult heart rate: 60-100 bpm
Tachycardia: >100 bpm
Bradycardia: <60 bpm
Circulatory system: venules, veins, deoxygenated blood enters by the vena cava, right atrium, tricuspid valve, right ventricle, pulmonary valve, pulmonary artery, lungs, pulmonary vein, left atrium, mitral valve, left ventricle, aortic valve, aorta, arteries, arterioles, capillaries…

What did you learn about the endocrine system?

A

-endocrine= secreted into the blood
-exocrine= secreted onto the skin
-endocrine glands= pineal, adrenal, pancreas, ovaries, testes, thymus, hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid
-3 groups of hormones: steroids (cortisol), peptide (insulin) and amino acid derivative (adrenalin)
-endocrine diseases: dwarfism, gigantism, acromegaly, Addison’s disease (hypoglycaemia), Cushing’s disease (hyperglycaemia), diabetes…

skeletal muscular system

A

3 different types of muscle: cardiac, skeletal (controls movement) and smooth (controls size of blood vessels)
-muscles convert energy into mechanical work, holds the structure of our body together
-magnesium is involved in muscle cramp
-layers of connective tissue: epimysium, perimysium, endomysium
-muscles are partly made out of muscle fibres

surgery book

A

-insisted on honesty (showing how surgery has good sides and downsides)
-medicine is about practice (ex: taking blood)
-importance of having a supportive mentor
-surgeons must have confidence (“sometimes wrong; never in doubt”)
-surgery isn’t about talent but there are some qualities you have to have (“skills can be taught, tenacity cannot”)
-Importance of how you learn and work smart (teamwork, reflection…)
