Difference between NHS and private care
Private sector: see your GP quickly, receive treatments quickly, patients pay or use insurance, better facilities & services, usually have the same consultant, flexible visiting hours,
NHS: getting an appointment can take up to a few weeks, free treatment, offer A&E services
Problems linked to privatisation of care
-hierarchy of care services (idea that private care is better than NHS)
Three principles of NHS
-Meets the needs of everyone
-Free at the point of delivery
-Based on clinical need and not the ability to pay
What is the principle of “Payment by Results” and what are the problems linked to it ?
=paying a healthcare provider a standard national price for each patient. seen pr treated
-problem: does not encourage quality of care
What is the GMC?
=General Medical Council
-keeps a register of qualified doctors
-fostering good medical practice
-dealing with doctors who may not be fit to practice
-promoting high standards of medical education and training
What are the Royal Colleges?
charged with setting standards within their field and for supervising the training of doctors within that specialty
British Medical Association (BMA)
-trade union
-protect rights and interests
What are the defence unions?
MDU (Medical Defence Union) and MPS (Medical Protection Society)
What is NICE?
=National Institute for Health and Care Excellence
-provide guidance on health promotion and the prevention and treatment of ill health
-guidance in health technologies, interventional procedures, clinical practice and public health
What is the Care Quality Commission (CQC)?
-inspect hospitals
-provide detailed reports to ensure the hospitals meet the national standards of quality and safety
