Work, Energy and Power Flashcards
Energy =
Something that enables physical work to be done
Work =
The result of when force acts upon an object to cause a displacement
Power =
The rate at which work is done upon an object
Work (J) =
force (N) x distance (m)
Work measure in :
Joules (J)
Force measured in :
Newtons (N)
Distance measured in :
Metres (m)
GPE (J) =
= mass (Kg) x gravity (N/kg) x height (m)
KE (J) =
½ x mass (Kg) x velocity**2 (m/s)
Law of the conservation of energy :
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be changed from one form to another
9 different forms of energy in the universe
- Kinetic Energy
- Thermal Energy
- EPE Energy
- Sound Energy
- Nuclear Energy
- Electrical Energy
- GPE Energy
- Chemical Energy
- Light Energy
Power (W) =
work (J) / time (s)
Efficiency =
useful energy transferred ÷ energy supplied) × 100
Energy changes that take place for a bouncing ball
- A falling ball transfers GPE into KE
- When the ball hits the ground, its shape changes and the KE is transferred into EPE
- As its shapes is restored the EPE changes back into KE
- As the bouncing ball gets higher in the air, KE is transferred back into GPE
