- Ensure that you both understand why the coaching session is needed

Feedback may be provided informally, at any time, or as part of a formalised process. List 3 general guidelines that should be applied if it is to be effective:
- If possible, wait until feedback has been requested as it is more meaningful when asked for
- Make feedback timely and relevant. Timing is everything when providing feedback, so try to make it as close to the event as possible
- Describe actions or behaviours accurately, so that the individual can do something about it
- Ensure the feedback is fair and genuine - people can detect insincerity
