Describe the function of the Control and Indicating Equipment (CIE).
The ClE is positioned adjacent to the FIP and is used to control all the smoke spill fans and air handling systems within the complex.
Describe four (4) features of a hose reel (installed in buildings)
- Are usually located within four metres of an exit
- Can be mounted using a fixed or swinging drum arrangement
- Hold a maximum of 36 m of 19 mm black rubber hose
- Have a working pressure that may be up to 1 MPa.

- For evacuation purposes,
- Prevent spread of smoke to other floors
- Assist firefighting operations
Describe the Automatic Evacuation Sequence of floors within a building over 25m in height and associated tones for each level.
- Affected level - evacuate tones
- Two levels above - alert tones
- One level below - alert tones
- Other levels - if the alarm continues for a set period of time, the evacuation tones continue to cascade in both directions
Explain the difference between photoelectric and ionisation type smoke detectors?
Photoelectric detectors operate on the scattering or absorption of light by smoke particles in a light beam; they respond quickly to larger smoke particles and are suitable for general application.
Ionization detectors respond quickly to smoke containing small particles normally produced by clean burning fires, but may respond slowly to optically dense smoke containing large particles which may be produced by smouldering materials.
How would you identify a Floor warden?
They generally wear a yellow helmet

The Chief Warden usually wears a white helmet
Describe the advantages and disadvantages of using thermal detectors in a private, residential kitchen?
Heat detectors are an advantage in a kitchen over smoke detectors as there is often unavoidable smoke in a kitchen from cooking that can give off false alarms.
A disadvantage is that the rapid heat changes can also set off heat detectors, for this reason a Fixed Temperature detector should be used over a rate of rise detector.
What five (5) roles should a workplace emergency control organisation consist of?
- Chief Warden
- Deputy Chief Warden
- Communications Officer
- Floor wardens or area wardens
- Wardens
What is the size requirement for the lettering on internal hydrants?

Describe the purpose of a booster connection.
Fire hydrant booster connections allow Fire Fighters to regulate pressure and flow to a system of attack fire hydrants from a safe, remote point with a minimum number of FRS pumping appliances.
There are eight (8) requirements for sprinkler valve locations as described in Australian Standard AS 2118 - 1999: List four (4) of them.
- In general, they should be located at ground level or not more than one level above or below ground level.
- All valves must be located in a secure room or enclosure, preferably adjacent to the main entry to the building.
- If the door to the valve room does not open onto a public place, access must be provided from the valve room to a door opening onto a public place.
- The access way must be protected by construction that can be sealed from smoke and heat.
What is High Expansion (Hi-Ex) Foam and what is the typical ration it operates at?
Typical Hi-Ex foam operates at 1,000:1 ratio
Describe the purpose of a EWIS.
For the purpose of enabling an orderly evacuation of the building to take place.
The system provides early warning to building occupants. It also communicates to the fire wardens to facilitate safe egress from the building.
