Work And Machines Flashcards
Work
In scientific terms, you do work any time you exert a force on an object that causes the object to move any distance.
Joule
When force is measured in newtons and distance in meters, the SI unit of work is the newton-meter. This unit is also called joule.
Power
Power is the rate at which work is done.
Watt
One joule of one work done is one second is one Watt of power.
Machine
Machines are devices that allow you to work in an easier way.
Input Force
When you do the work, the force you exert is called input force.
Output force
The machine exerts the output force over the output distance.
Mechanical advantage
A machine’s mechanical advantage is a number of times a machine increases a force exerted on it.
Efficiency
The efficiency of a machine compares output work to the input work.
Simple Machines
A simple machine is the most basic device for making work easier.
Inclined plane
An inclined plane is a flat, slope surface.
Wedge
A wedge is a device that is thick at one end and tapers to a thin edge at the other end.
Screw
Like a wedge, a screw is a simple machine that is related to the inclined plane.
Lever
A lever is a rigid bar is free to pivot, or rotate, on a fixed force.
Fulcrum
The fixed point that a lever pivots around is called the fulcrum.
