Work And Energy Flashcards
What is work?
The transfer of energy from one object to another
Define Joule
The amount of work done when a force of one Newton moves a body through 1 meter in the direction of the force
Define energy
The ability to do work
State the law of conservation of energy
The total energy in a system cannot be created nor destroyed, only transferred from one form to another
Define kinetic energy
The energy that an object possesses by virtue of its motion (I.e. Due to its velocity)
Define gravitational potential energy
The energy that an object possesses by virtue of its position above a fixed reference point (I.e. Due to its height)
Define mechanical energy
The sum of both kinetic (Ek) and gravitational potential (Ep) energies
State the principle of conservation of mechanical energy
In the absence of air resistance or any external forces, the mechanical energy of an object remains constant.
State the work energy theorem
The work done by a net force on an object is equal to the change in kinetic energy of the object
Define work
The product of an object’s displacement and the component of the force parallel to the displacement
