Electrostatics Flashcards
Elementary charge unit
The quantity of charge on a proton or electron
Total charge
The sum of all positive and negative charges in a piece of matter
Principal of conservation of charge
The net charge in an isolated system remains constant during any physical process
Triboelectric series
List of different materials, based on their ability to become positively charged
Coulomb’s law
Every charged object exerts a force on every other charged object.
The magnitude of the force is directly proportional to the product of the charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the charges
Point charge
The charges do not have any mass or occupy any volume themselves, they only contain charge
Electric field
Region of space in which an electric charge experiences an electrostatic force.
Direction of the electric field
The direction of the force experienced by a small, positive test charge
Electric field magnitude
The force experiences by a small, positive test charge per unit test charge.
Charge
An inert property of matter that creates force
