What is work?
Work is looking after the house, children, not always paid, working at school, etc.
What is employment?
Employment is being paid for something you do.
What are the two types of employment?
Formal employment – They have regular hours, a set wage, a contract, tax contributions and good working conditions.
Informal employment – These jobs are often unskilled and labour intensive. They require little money to setup and there is no regulation around the working conditions.
What are the four employment sectors?
Primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary.
What is the primary industry?
Primary activities involve the gathering or extracting of raw materials.
What is the secondary industry?
Secondary activities manufacture (or make) products from these raw materials.
What is the tertiary industry?
Tertiary activities provide a service.
What is the quaternary industry?
Quaternary industries It includes hi-tech research and development industries.
What are the two types of industry?
Heavy industry - making large products like ships, lorries and cars.
Light industry - making small products such as clothes and household goods.
What is the biggest industry?
Currently, the tertiary industry is by far the biggest, with secondary second and primary and quaternary both drawing. However, the quaternary industry is growing the most, as it has only come around recently.
