Tenement
A building in which several families rent rooms or apartments, often with little sanitation or safety

1870s - 1890s; time period looked good on the outside, despite the corrupt politics and growing gap between the rich and poor
Monopoly
Complete control of a product or business by one person or group
Robber Barons
Refers to the industrials or big business owners who gained huge profits by paying their employees extremely low wages, and drove their competitors out of business
Captain of industry
Industrial leaders who transformed the American economy with their business skills
Laissez-faire
Idea that government should play as small a role as possible economic affairs
Entrepreneur
A person who organizes, manages, and takes on the risks of a buisness

Movement of people from rural areas to cities
