Remuneration
The entire package of material rewards received by an employee eg pay , pension , plus fringe benefits eg company car and private health insurance
Outsourcing
Paying another business or individual as a contractor to undertake a task which could otherwise be completed by an employee eg a technical specialist to manage your website
Labour turnover
Number of staff leaving a company as a percentage of the number employed
Subcontracting
Using another business to complete an aspect of operations (outsourcing a form)
Core workers
Employees essential to operations, often highly paid, good conditions and job security
Zero hour contracts
Theses are essentially work on demand with no commitment from the employer.rate of duties are agreed but the hours of work are sporadic ie needed one week but not the next
Severance
Word for the ending of a contract of employment with an employee and can be via dismissal or redundancy
Redeployment
Moving an employee to new job functions because the department has been closed or they are not good enough for there current post
Dismissal
Termination of an employees contract due to gross misconduct
Redundancy
Where a contract is terminated due to the role of the employee ceasing to exist
Trade union
An organisation representing the interests and goals of working people - members pay subscription to join
Collective bargaining
A group or a body which represents employees negotiates changes on behalf of the employees eg trade unions or work council
Individual approach
Where an individual discusses issues relating to their terms and conditions and of employment with their employer
Lean production
Japanese measures that describes a range of time saving measures eg jit and flexible specialisation
Absenteeism
Measure the rate of deliberate workforce absence as a proportion of the employee total
centralised structure
In an organisation where decision making is centralised all decisions are made by one person or committee or senior managers right at the top
Decentralised structure
A business which delegates responsibilities and decision making powers to employees lower down the chain of command. Many branches make decisions themselves
Hierarchy
Traditional business structure is a series of levels where each level has responsibility and authority over levels below
Chain of command
Path of communication and authority up and down the hierarchy
Span of control
Number of workers who are answerable directly to a manager
Narrow span of control
Responsibility for fewer workers
Wide span of control
Responsibility for a lot of workers
Organisational design
The structure of a business commonly organised by either area customer function product or process
Matrix structure
Where staff work in project teams in addition to their responsibilities within their own department
Job enrichment
Adding tasks which have more responsibility at next level of challenge. This helps to increase overall skills and may be useful preparation for promotion
