word recognition testing reliability and validity Flashcards
what is reliability
if we keep testing we get the same result
ability to get the same result each time you test it under the same conditions
WRS Reliability
WRS at 100 and 0 have high reliability and everything in between doesn’t
affected by length of the word list you give
what is validity
are we testing the thing we think we are testing
affected by test conditions (recordings, noise, etc.)
validity
Test Environment and Test Equipment Affect Word Recognition Scores
For differential diagnosis:
For differential diagnosis:
Monaural
Auditory only
Ensure patient is not utilizing visual cues
Ensure audibility at primary speech frequencies
one ear only
auditory only (no visual cues)
making sure it is audible at all frequencies
what could affect reliability and validity?
partial word lists
increases as sample size decreases
variability
The farther the score is from % or %, the less confidence one can have in the specific score obtained
100% 0%
How does speaker voice (male vs. female) affect word recognition scores?
we get better scores with male voices
What does it mean when we say we are concerned about variability for WRS scores?
want to make sure our scores are reliable and if they are highly variable they are not useful and we are making comparisons with our score so it is not useful with high variability
How does decreasing the size of the word list increase variability?
the shorter the word list the greater the variability the less reliable it is
Regardless of list size, which of the following scores has greater or less variability? 0%; 44%; 60%; 100%
0 and 100 have less variability
44 and 60 are greater variability
when is it important to give the full list?
more important if you got 60 or 40
why do we use recorded materials?
Different voice from morning ot the afternoon
you subconsciously change your tone and enunciate more when speaking with people with HL
Different voice from morning ot the afternoon
you subconsciously change your tone and enunciate more when speaking with people with HL
there is lots of variability
accents & intonations (people’s voices are different)
people forget to look at the VU meter
not standardized
unable to replicate exactly how it was presented
