Where the basic meaning of the word is in medical terms, usually indicates a body part involved
What is a combining form?
Word root with vowel at the end, used when suffix begins with a consenenant, helps word flow better
When written alone include a backslash between word root and combining form
Ie : gastr/o
What is a suffix in medical terminology
Always comes at the end of the word after the word root/combining form
Usually indicates procedure, condition, disorder, or disease
When written alone, include a hyphen at the beginning of the suffix
Prefixes
Always comes at the beginning of word root
Not every term requires a prefix
Usually indicates location, time, number, or status
Include a hyphen at the end of the prefix if written alone
Important guidelines
Word roots are not complete terms on their own, a suffix must be added after the word root/combining form
