What do proper nouns usually refer to?
Specific people or places
What are common nouns?
Less specific nouns than proper nouns,refer to types of people, places or feelings
What are concrete nouns?
Things that exist physically; things you can see and feel
What are abstract nouns?
Things that don’t exist physically; feelings, ideas and qualities
What do collective nouns refer to?
Groups of animals, people or objects
How is a noun shown to have a possession or be possessive of an object?
Use of an apostrophe
What are words such as hotter and bigger known as?
Comparative adjectives
What is an example of a superlative adjective?
Hottest and biggest
What is the form from which verbs derive from? Give an example of this.
Infinitive, an example of this is ‘to be’
What is a main verb?
A single verb in a sentence that expresses the main meaning
What are auxiliary verbs? Where are they placed in a sentence?
‘Helping verbs’, these are placed before the main verb
What are the only 3 primary verbs?
Be, have and do
When are modal auxiliaries (can, will, shall) used?
Only in conjunction with a main verb
What is emphasised when an active verb is used?
The person or thing performing the action
What is emphasised when the passive verb is used?
The person or thing to which something something has happened to
What do personal pronouns do?
Replace the subject or object of a sentence
What pronouns show a subject possessing an object?
Possessive pronouns
What do reflexive pronouns indicate?
That the object and the subject of the sentence are the same
What do demonstrative nouns do?
‘Point’ at something or someone
What type of pronouns don’t refer to specific persons and things?
Indefinite pronouns
What do relative pronouns do? And where are they placed next to the noun?
Link a sentence together, they are placed after the noun

‘Joining words’
What are 3 examples of coordinating conjunctions?

What do subordinating conjunctions do?
Connect a subordinate clause and main clause
What do prepositions indicate?
How one thing is related to something else
Where are determiners placed in a sentence?
Before nouns
What do other determiners refer to, that aren’t possessive or demonstrative?
Quantity, either specifically (one, two, three) or vaguely (few, many)
