Describe two things needed for when screwing wood…
Any problems with this method?
Two sizes of hole are needed;
A clearance hole; should be bigger than the screw shank so it can move freely in the clearance hole.
A pilot hole; must be smaller than the screw core so the core fits tightly in.
- Aesthetics are poor.
What is a butt joint?
Any problems with it?
The wood pieces are glued (PVA) at 90^ [like a picturer fram corner]
It’s easy to make but is weak, also set PVA fractures when dropped; breaking the joint
Finger joint; problems and positives…
Dovetail joints are very strong and look good; high-quality furniture
But they’re complex and difficult to cut.
What type of fitting might you find on some Ikea furniture?
A knock down fitting; easy assembly using alan keys, cheaper and less effort for manufacturers
How does lamination work?
Layered veneers placed in male and female mould and clamped.
How does Steam bending work?
Put a knot free wood (beech) into a seam chest, open and impregnate.
Why would you use steam bending / lamination for furniture?
For aesthetics; you can get lovely curves

It is easy and quick; rub on and rub off finsih.

- Only temporary; replace regularly
What type of finish is oil?
Temporary.
What is varnish?
Clear paint with no pigment; interior varnish is acrylic
Yacht (?) varnish is exterior
How might you colour a wood?
With a stain; grain visible // Paint; palstic
What is pressure treatment?
Tantalize; helps preserve the wood from fungal decay / insects; important for things like fence posts.
Chemical preservatives; vacuum and pressure used to force the preservatives in.
Name 4 precautions to take when working with woods.
1) Wear safety goggles /glasses
2) Keep fingers away from equipment
3) Wear a dust mask
4) Ensure the extraction equipment is turned on.
