Alloys Flashcards
What is an alloy?
A mixture of 2+ metals to get the best properties of the base metals
Duralumin; What type of alloy is it? What's it made from? What are it's properties? Positives / negatives?
Non ferrous alloy 4 % copper 95 % aluminium High strength - Very expensive, not easily recyclable \+ Can use less as it's very strong; lighter
Bronze
What type of alloy is it?
What’s it made from?
What are it’s properties?
Non ferrous alloy
Copper and tin
Easy to work and cast, is self lubricating
Stainless Steel
What type of alloy is it?
What’s it made from?
What are it’s properties?
Ferrous alloy
Steel 80% chrome and nickel 20%
Non corrosive, tough, wear resistant
High speed steel;
What type of alloy is it?
What’s it made from?
What are it’s properties?
Ferrous alloy
Steel, Tungsten, Molybdenum, Chromium, Cobalt, Aluminium
Very hard, can be sharpened to a sharp edge, will cut when hot
What are possible uses for ferrous alloys?
Cutlery, street furniture, cutting and press tools
What are possible uses for non-ferrous alloys?
Ornaments, valves, boat fittings, sculpture, coins and jewellery
What alloy could you find in a kitchen?
Stainless steel; cutlery and sink
Why might you use stainless steel for a sink?
It doesn’t corrode in moisture and air, and is chemical resistant so can be cleaned with bleach
Stainless steel is malleable; can be press formed into the shape of the sink. It also has an ‘attractive’ silver appearance making it aesthetically pleasing.
Stainless steel is tough and wear resistant so will resist scratching and indentation.
What alloy would you use for a structural component of an aircraft?
Duralumin
Why is high speed steel used in cutting tools?
It’s hard, can be sharpened and will cut even when hot
