Q

What test would be used for tensile strength?

A

A tensometer would be used to measure tensile strength. The test piece is placed in between the grips, then the worm drive is twisted to stretch the material. The results are plotted by a stylus on the drum.

Q

What is the Brinell ball test?

A

The Brinell ball test is used to test hardness. A small Brinell ball is pressed into the material. The material is pressed on a plate which is screwed upwards towards the ball

Q

What is the Vickers Pyramid test?

A

The vickers pyramid test is used to test very hard materials for hardness. A small diamond is pressed into the test piece.

Q

Describe the test for toughness

A

An IZOD impact test is used to test material for toughness. The material is weakened by a notched piece being inserted into one side. A hammer is then swung on a pendulum into the test piece. The toughness of the material is measured by the energy that the material absorbed

Q

Describe a non destructive hardness test

A

A shore scleroscope is used to test a materials hardness. A small diamond hammer is dropped onto the test piece. The rebound of the diamond is then measured to compare the hardness of the material
