Woods Flashcards
What are the benefits of soft woods
They are quicker to grow so they are more cost effective than hard woods, they are apart of sustainable forestry which means they are fast growing
What are the benefits of manufactured boards
Inexpensive compared to solid wood because they are made from the parts that would normally go to waste, stable and flat even surface, smooth finish, doesn’t warp twist or bow like timber
What are the disadvantages to manufactured boards
Contain adhesives and are dangerous to use especially MDF. Inhaling MDF dust can cause cancer. Some types of manufactured board are not very durable such as chipboard funature as it crumbles over time at the edges. Don’t weather well
What are the properties and identifying features of plywood
Properties = stable and durable, strong due to alternate grain direction in each layer
Identifying features= thin layers of wood each layer placed at 90 degrees to each other
What are the properties and identifying features of flexi-ply
Properties= stable and durable able to bend into curved shapes
Identifying features= thin layers of wood, each layer is laminated to allow the board to flex
What are th properties and the identifying features if chipboard
Properties= prone to splitting when used with screws. Difficult to cut and shape chips easily
Identifying features= compressed wood chips with a solid wood veneer on top
What are the properties and identifying features of MDF
Properties = stable stiff easy to cut and shape and the dust is very harmful
Identifying features = wood fibres compress together, satin smooth surface texture rougher edges
What are the properties and identifying features of hardboard
Properties= very soft with little strength, bends easily and stable on one side only. Thin boards stay flat but cannot hold weight.
Identifying features= wood fibres pressed together, top is smooth and back is soft and almost furry
What are the benefits of hardwoods
Less likely to rot, more durable
What are the disadvantages of hardwoods
Slower to grow which makes them more expensive
More prone to splitting, warping and twisting
What are the properties and identifying features of Beech
Properties - strong and durable but easy to work with and finish
Identifying features- pale brown colour, distinctive flecks in the grain
What are the properties and identifying of Mahogany
Properties- Moderately strong, easy to work with, durable and finishes well with oil, wax and varnish particularly
Identifying features - light brown to reddish brown with a close and even grain which gives a smooth and even surface
What are the properties and identifying features of Oak
Properties - Strong, tough and durable but very difficult to work with
Identifying features- open grained with distinctive markings looks expensive
What are the properties and identifying features of ash
Properties - strong, tough, and durable with a good elasticity
Identifying features- pale brown with a straight grain which can have a course texture
