Metals Flashcards
What are the advantages of metals
Come in a range of colours
Metals can be polished to a high shine
Are very good at conducting electricity
Metals such as aluminium have a good strength to weight ratio
What are the disadvantages of using metals
Ferrous metals are prone to rusting so a finish must be applied to it
Adding time which adds to cost of manufacture
Once all the metal has been mined there will be none left
Can be recycled
What is a ferrous metal
A ferrous metal is a metal he contains iron which can therefore make it prone to rust as iron reacts with oxygen which develops iron oxide
Require a finish
Are magnetic
What are the properties and identifying features of iron
Properties - strong, tough cannot be bent or forged, a hard outer skin
Identifying features - usually painted to avoid rust very dark gray to black with a Matt texture
What are the properties and identifying features of mild-steel
Properties- Ductile, and malleable yet tough easy to weld
Identifying features- silvery grey with poor corrosion resistance
What are the properties and identifying features of high-carbon steel
Properties- Brittle, difficult to cut resistant to wear
Identifying features- silvery grey with poor corrosion resistance
What are the properties and identifying features of stainless steel
Properties- Corrosion resistant, tough, difficult to cut and shape
Identifying features- silvery grey, can appear dull or or shiny
What is a non-ferrous metal
Doesn’t contain iron which means it is non magnetic
Don’t rust
Can tarnish
What are the properties and identifying feature of aluminium (pure metal)
Properties- good strength to weight ratio, malleable, conducts heat and electricity well ductile
Identifying features- shiny silvery grey colour that polishes well
What are the properties and identifying features of brass
Properties- rigid, polishes well, conducts heal and electricity well, solders well
Identifying features- golden tones that polish well
What are the properties and identifying features of copper
Properties- tough, ductile, malleable, conducts heat and electricity well, solders well
