Wood Work Flashcards
What is a butt joint?
A butt joint is a technique in which two pieces of wood are joined by simply placing their ends together without any special shaping. The butt joint is the simplest joint to make since it merely involves cutting the wood to the appropriate length and butting them together.
What is a lap joint?
a joint made by halving the thickness of each member at the joint and fitting them together.
What is a mitre joint?
made between two pieces of wood at an angle of 90°, such that the line of junction bisects this angle.
What is a finger joint?
made by cutting a set of complementary rectangular cuts in two pieces of wood, which are then glued. To visualize a finger joint simply interlock the fingers of your hands at a ninety degree angle; hence the name “finger joint.”
What is a dovetail joint?
A series of pins cut to extend from the end of one board interlock with a series of tails cut into the end of another board. The pins and tails have a trapezoidal shape.
What is a dowel joint?
Dowels are used for making strong, accurate joints in wood. They are thicker and sturdier than nails or screws and therefore less prone to breakage. They provide a stronger joint than just using glue as they insert into both the pieces of wood being joined together.
What is a housing joint?
a slot is cut across the grain in one piece for another piece to set into
What is a chisel for?
Breaking away small amounts of wood
What is a hacksaw for?
Cutting curves in wood
What is a marking gage for?
Slightly indenting wood to make clear marks
What is a mechanism?
A device which changes an input motion and force into a desired output motion and force
What is a linkage?
An assembly of levers designed to transmit motion and forces
Name 3 different linkages
- parallel
- lazy tongs
- pantograph
