Wood processes Flashcards
List the 6 traditional wood joints
Dovetail Comb/finger Mortise and Tenon Dowel Housing Half lap
What are knock down fittings used for?
manufacture flat pack furniture
relatively easy to use with limited number of simple tools
List 5 types of knockdown fittings
modesty blocks barrel and nut bolts cam-lock connectors wood screws coach bolts
What are modesty blocks?
all, rigid, polymer block
moulded holes that take screws are used to join block to panels
used on cupboards and storage units
What are barrel nuts and bolts?
use a cross dowel that is fitted into one of the pieces to be joined
bolt inserted through other pice of timber an tightened
often used in bed frames
What are cam-lock connectors?
metal dowel screwed into one of the pieces
cam is a disk that fits into a predrilled hole
disk is rotated with screwdriver so collar on dowel locks into cam and pulls both pieces tightly together
used in flat pack furniture
What are wood screws?
used for screwing two pieces of wood together when the thread is needed only at the bottom
top part drilled with clearance hole that the screw simply pushes through
What are coach bolts?
used to join pieces of wood
under domed head of bolt is square piece that digs into the wood when tightened
used for fitting door looks or benches
What is wood lamination used for?
bonding material together
uses wood veers glued together an bent over former o when dry, they form a thicker board
What is steam bending used for?
combined heat and steam makes strips of wood pliable so they can be shaped over a former
wood placed into steam box and bent over a former
Why is steam bending better than lamination?
quicker and less wasteful
laminating involves waiting for glue to dry and parts need to often be trimmed to final size
What does turning machine wood on?
lathe
What are the three turning methods?
turning between centres - for spindles
turning on a faceplate - domes
turning in a chuck - grip item while it is machined
What is milling used for?
small-sized basic jobs such as a rough prototype
slow process ad milling machines do not have as large a work art as CNC routers
What is routering used for?
machine slots and holes in wood or make decorative ‘mouldings’ on the edges
can be manual plunge routers or CNC
