Wood cuts Flashcards
The designer is specifying a veneer cut of oak for use at the architectural woodwork located behind the main reception feature wall at a high-end boutique hotel.
The desired look has a minimal grain pattern. Which method of cutting should be specified?
Rift Sliced
Rift Sliced
is accomplished by quartering a log and cutting it at 15-degree angle to the growth rings. Like quarter slicing, it results in a straight-grained pattern and is commonly used with oak to eliminate the appearance of markings perpendicular to the direction of the grain.
Rotary Sliced
types of solid stock lumber cutting, not a veneer
Plain Sawn
types of solid stock lumber cutting, not a veneer
Rift Sawn
produces a very pronounced grain pattern that is often undesirable for fine-quality wood finishes, although it does produce the most veneer with the least waste.
Flat Plain Slicing
cuts along the length of the log parallel to the surface; has variegated wavy figure with grain lines closer together at the sides
Quarter Slicing
cuts perpendicular to growth ring; accentuating straight grain.
Half-round Slicing
cuts on an arc parallel to the center of the log.
Rift cut
Made by slicing oak at a slight angle that minimizes irregularities in the wood.
Rotary Cut
Makes a continuous roll of veneer with a variegated wave-like figure on a lathe; used principally for plywood.
How can composite wood veneers can be used?
as a “green” alternative to standard wood veneers
