Wood, Composite, and Transparent Plastic Structures Explanations Flashcards
What is the difference between laminated wood and plywood?
They are both made from layers of wood glued together, but laminated wood the grain of the layers are parallel to each other, whereas in plywood the grain of alternate layers are at right angles to each other.
Wood defects: knots, checks, splits, pitch pockets, cross grain, curly grain, decay, dry rot
Knots: dark, circular holes that can be found on woods surface. Knots are created from branches that cause living wood grain to grow around them.
Checks: a surface crack within the board, usually running lengthwise.
Splits: a rupture or separation in the wood grain which reduces a board’s appearance, strength, or utility.
Pitch Pockets: a cavity in a piece of wood caused by insects or some impact to the tree.
Cross grain: general term depending the deviation of the wood fibres from a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tree.
curly grain: gives the wood a ribboned effect that is perpendicular to the grain.
decay: a common form of decay that refers to the disintegration of the wood fiber and is caused by microscopic organisms like mold and fungus that feed off the wood.
dry rot: Timber damaged by dry rot will be fragile, brittle, dried out and warped.

What is compression wood?
What is open assembly time?
The time interval between the spreading of an adhesive and the completion of the assembly of the parts.
What is a scarf joint?
A joint in wood structures in which two pieces fit snuggly together like a puzzle.
What is a splayed patch?
A splayed patch is a flush patch. The term splayed denotes that the edges of the patch are tapered, with the slope cut at a 5:1 ratio to the thickness of the skin.
What is a surface patch?
