Wood Flashcards
What is Dendrochronology ?
The study of tree time
How do you know the tree is made of “true wood”
The wood will have rings
What is Xylem and what is its purpose?
Xylem is the substance in trees that carries water.
What is Phloem and what is its purpose?
Phloem is the substance in a tree that carries nutrient.
What makes up the rings in the wood? Xylem or Phloem?
Xylem
In a tree ring what is the darker circle on the inside called? And what causes it?
This is called Heartwood and this happens because the xylem has been plugged up and can not carry water anymore.
What is the lighter color of the tree ring called?
Sapwood, this has the ability to carry water.
What is between the Bark and the Xylem?
The Phloem
What is girdling?
When the bark and phloem is taken off the tree, this can cause little trees to die.
What are the reasons trees have bark?
Protects from animals such as insects.
It prevents desiccation (drying out)
It provides insulation in the spring from small freezes.
Can every tree be tapped for syrup?
YES
Does tapping kill the tree?
No
This wood can resist denting and has much smaller tree rings
Hardwood
Examples: Walnut, Oak, and Hedge
This wood has large tree rings, and can be dented easily.
Softwood
Examples: Pine, Cedar, Balsa
Which has wood? Dicots, monocots, and/or gymnosperms?
Dicots and Angiosperms make wood and also gymnosperms
