16
Q

What is a disadvantage of man made woods

A

They are difficult to join using normal wood joints and often require special fixings. Nailing and screwing into the edge can be a problem, as the boards tend to split apart as the screw or nail goes in.

17
Q

How can you remember man made woods

A

C. Chip board
P. Plywood
M. MDF

18
Q

Plywood

A

Plywood is made from layers of thin wood glued one on top of the other to form a sheet.
Plywood is extremely strong and it gets this strength from the arrangement of the glued layers. The grain of each layer is at 90 degrees to that of the next layer.
There are always an odd number of layers.

19
Q

Chip board

A

This is made from chips of wood compressed and glued together. It tends to be weaker than MDF and plywood. Chipboard is also a difficult material to cut, join and finish because the chips can separate when you try to screw or nail into the edges.

20
Q

MDF

A

MDF stands for medium density fibreboard. It is made from small particles of wood chips glued and compressed together to form a sheet. While MDF is not as strong as plywood it is cheaper and very useful for making projects such as mechanical toys and boxes

21

Medium density fireboard
