Mechanisms ๐Ÿ‘ Flashcards

1
Q

What are mechanisms

A

โ€ขThey make a job easier to do.
โ€ขThey involve some kind of movement.
โ€ขThey involve some kind of force.
โ€ขThey need an input to make them work.
โ€ขThey produce some kind of output.

A mechanism is a system of moving parts that performs some function. They are used to reduce the effort in relation to work

Q

What is a lever

A

A lever is a long, rigid object with a pivot somewhere along its length.
โ€ขThe pivot is sometimes called the fulcrum.

Q

1st class lever

A

Class 1 levers have the load at one end, the effort at the other and the fulcrum in the middle.
โ€ขE.g.: A workman pushing a trolley. Or scissors or a crowbar.

2nd class lever

A

Class 2 Levers have the load in the middle and the effort and fulcrum on the outside.
โ€ขE.g.: A gardener lifting a wheelbarrow

3rd class lever

A

Class 3 levers has the fulcrum at one end, the load and the other and the effort somewhere in the middle.
โ€ขE.g.: A fisherman catching a fish. Or tweezers

Q

What is a rack and pinion gear system

A

The โ€˜pinionโ€™ is the normal round gear and the โ€˜rackโ€™ is straight or flat. The pinion rotates and moves the rack in a straight line - another way of describing this is to say โ€˜rotary motionโ€™ changes to โ€˜linear motionโ€™.

Q

Worm and wheel gear system

A

The worm gear is usually found on an electric motor.
For one rotation of the worm the wheel rotates by one tooth

Q

Bevel gears system

A

Gears are cone-shaped. The angle is known as a bevel. They transfer rotary motion through 90 degrees.

Q

What are the 4 types of motion and how do they move

A

Linear motion is straight line motion
โ€ขReciprocating motion is straight line motion going both forwards and backwards
โ€ขRotary motion is going round and round
โ€ขOscillating motion swings back and forward about a pivot

Q

What are three basic build blocks of mechanical control

A

Input. The input is usually a force and initiates the process.
Process. The process will change the magnitude or direction of the force.
Output The output put is what performs the desired task

Q

Sum up what a mechanism can do

A

โ€ข Has an input, process and output

โ€ข Can change the direction in which a force acts

โ€ข Can change the size of the force

โ€ข Can change the place where the force acts

Q

What are gears

A

Gears are wheels with teeth which mesh to transmit rotary motion. When two or more gears mesh it is called a gear train. There are two types: Simple and Compound.

Whatโ€™s an example of an everyday mechanism

A

17
Q

What are the 3 parts of a lever

A

Fulcrum, load, effort

18
Q

What is a good example of bevel gears

A

A good example is seen as the main mechanism for a hand drill. As the handle of the drill is turned in a vertical direction, the bevel gears change the rotation of the chuck to a horizontal rotation.

Whatโ€™s an example of oscillating motion

A

Windscreen wipers on a car

20

22
Q

A

Programmed robot moving forward and backwards.
