What did the new marriage laws lay out
- concubinage was abolished
- arranged marriages were to be discontinued
- the paying of dowries and bride-prices was forbidden
- women (and men) who had been previously forced to marry were entitled to divorce their partners
- all marriages had to be officially recorded and registered.
