Q

Why were Chinese intellectuals attracted to Russia?

A

Both countries were in a similar situation: had been defeated by Japan, trying to modernise politically and economically, and were relatively poor in relation to the western powers. In addition, the Chinese were impressed by the Bolshevik success in the 1917 revolution, establishing a worker’s state and repelling the western powers from 1918-1920.

Q

Why were Chinese radicals drawn to Marxism?

A

It seemed the 1911 revolution and the republic that had followed had failed to advance China’s cause. Chinese radicals saw this as the failure of Western Democracy, and instead looked to Marxism as a rejection of Western values, and its explanation of the “imperialist phase of capitalism” that had led to China’s humiliation.

Q

How did Bolshevik Russia influence the early CCP?

A

They sent comintern agents to assist the Chinese communists. Lenin saw Western colonialism as a stage in the dialectical process, and saw the overthrow of the imperialists as the triumph of proletariat over capitalists. However, this was a flawed view as China among other countries were not advanced to the correct stage in the dialectical theory.
