Outline the MeToo movement

A
  • Spread virally in 2017 in an attempt to demonstrate the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and harassment in the workplace
  • Followed the Hollywood scandal with Harvey Weinstein (and subsequently a long line of others)
  • People (high profile and not) tweeted their experiences
  • In Canada, the result has been a great increase in number of calls to rape crisis centres and women’s shelters
  • Conversation regarding harassments and assaults in Canada has taken on stream before the Hollywood movement, but that movement helped increase the sense of urgency for progress toward long term change
