Outline the key points of the gender of intimacy
- intimacy is expressed in gendered ways - women more emotional - this is impacted by socialisation
- Robert Lewis: identified barriers to emotional intimacy among men including competition, the need to be in control, homophobia and a lack of skills and positive role models for men
- intimacy in marriage, intimacy in communication, intimacy in friendships
Outline the key points of romantic love
- changing nature: used to marry for economic dependency not love
- culturally relative
- Studies suggest that men tend to be stronger believers in love ideologies (e.g. love at first sight) and they tend to fall in love more quickly. Women, on the other hand, are more pragmatic but once they are in love they tend to experience it more intensely
