Below minimal normal rate/change of pregnancy

IV infusion in normal saline or lactated ringers

What are the adverse effects of oxytocin?
-Tachysystole
-Fetal heart rate changes
-Hyponatremia
-Hypotension
-Hyperbilirubinemia
What are the benefits of oxytocin use?
-No difference in C-section rate
-Reach active labor sooner with shorter overall labor
-Less likely to require antibiotics before or during labor
What is the dose of oxytocin given when used for medical termination?
50 units/500mL over 3 hours + 1 hour rest
*repeat with additional 50 units per cycle
What procedures are put into place to minimize oxytocin risk?
-Limited access to infusions
-Use auxiliary labels
