How were Women Involved in Enlightenment

A

Women righter’s tried to improve their opportunities for better eduction.
Mary Astell published a book about the lack of education for women.
“If all men are born free, how is it that all women are born slaves?”
Mary Wollenstone also wrote an essay arguing that women need eduction to be useful members of society.
She urged women to enter male jobs such as medicine and politics.

Who was Mary Wollstonecraft

A

She advocated for better education for women in the 1700’s.
She and her sisters taught themselves at home and she worked at a london Publisher’s which was very rare for a woman at the time.

Who was Olympe de Gouges

A

A French writer and social reformer who challenged traditional views of women.
She was active in politics and took on social issues of the time such as divorce, maternity hospitals and the rights of children born to unmarried mothers.
She wrote a lot about her ideas and encouraged strength in women during the French Revolution when France got rid of the monarchy and created a fairer system of ruling.

Who was Emilie du Chatelet.

A

She was an aristocrat trained as a mathematician and physicist during a time when women were not encouraged to study science.
She is most famous for translating Isaac Newton’s book from Latin to French which was huge as it helped more people understand his theories about science which was important at the time when science was challenging the traditional ideas of the world that the Church represented.

What is the legacy of enlightenment

A

Feminism came from enlightment in the 1700’s and started the movement towards equality for women. Feminists believed women should have equal rights to men in everything from education, work, payand socially.

A

Wave 1 - 19th century - the women’s suffrage movements where women fought for the right to vote in politics.
Wave 2 - - 1960’s - women fought for total legal and social equality wiht men.
Wave 3 - 1990’s women fought for equal pay and equality in higher level jobs and better benefits including maternity pay.
