Positive- heritage
By stressing African heritage of AAs, women were encouraged to be proud of their own culture

By 1970 2/3 of its members were women. They trained alongside men and in propaganda were shown as revolutionaries

Women were local leaders in organisations and took part in community initiatives that were a spin-off from BP e.g. healthcare

“Revolutionary first sisterhood second” inspired women to be active in political activity
Negative- tradition
Male attitudes had implemented rise of women in national prominence and decision making roles in civil right movement
Negative- feminism
Seen by male AA activists as “a white woman’s thing”
Negative- women in local activism
Fell into traditional women roles of caring for families + supporting other women
Negative- although
Although widening of political discussions did encourage a critical attitude which may have encouraged feminism, the fear of AA revolutionary activity provoked black lash and encouraged conservatism
