Positive- Dawes act 1887
Gave some NA opportunities to become landowners and full citizen, it wasn’t what they wanted (preserve culture)
Positive- reservations
Gave opportunity to establish farming communities and provide opportunity for better health care. Made it easier for NA tribal customs to survive
Positive- boarding schools
Gave NA opportunity to find better jobs. Some found employment working in Indian Agency Offices
Positive- victory
Against Custer at Little Bighorn 1876 had convinced some the position of NA needed to improve
Negative- assimilation
Lost independence
Negative- reservations
Policy failed as BA lost freedom and denied Civil rights (amount of land reduced). Life there was harsh, land was of poor quality and many were u able to adopt
Negative- dependence
Became dependent on gov subsidies, these were insufficient and often cut
Negative- education
Eduction was poor and enabled them to get jobs which forced them back to reservations where there were seen as untrustworthy
Negative- period ended
Fended with massacre of Sioux Tribe at Wounded Knee
