Politics slow before 1939
By 1939, only 9 women had entered politics full time.
However, Nellie Tayloe Ross, Florence Allen and Mary McLeod Bethune all succeeded in being appointed to high profile and important political roles.
FDR’s appointed Frances Perkins as Secretary of Labor (first woman to be given a job in the Cabinet).
Despite opposition and criticism from males, businessmen, unionists and politicians she actively promoted social reform
Women were divided between those still focused on the family and home and those anxious to press ahead for an Equal Rights Amendment Act.
