Ву 1900, education was recognised as an important factor in creating better work opportunities for women. Half of all high school graduates were female.​
The late 19th century had witnessed an expansion of opportunities in higher education.​
However, many women still saw a good education as an important part of their preparation for marriage and motherhood.​
