What was the Nazi view on women?
3 K’s - Kinder, Kuche, Kirche (children, kitchen, church)
wanted weimar reversal where women were drinking, clubling and smoking
What was the ideal Nazi women in terms of appearance and expectations?
blonde, athletic, big hips = better child-bearing & expected to not smoke, avoid make up, full skirts + flat shoes, good cooks
What implementations were made in June 1933 to do with women?
- women offered interest fee loans of 600 Reichsmarks to marry and not work
- women excluded from politics & Nazi Women Organisation established - anti-feminism
What policies were made in Jan 1934 to do with women?
proportion of girls allowed in higher education was limited - extended to 1937
grammar schools for girls abolished & banned Latin - needed for Uni
Why did policies with women have to change in 1937?
labour shortage from the 4YP - required more workers.
Give 3 results of the changes in policies for women after 1937
1) women put in factories and rejoined professions, 5.7m in 1937 - 7.1m 1939
2) number of female doctors increased - girls encouraged to teach
3) War meant women were needed for work - 1942 = 52% workforce was female.
What were some policies introduced concerning the family?
1) anti-abortion laws
2) limited contraceptive advice & increased maternity benefits
3) propaganda raised motherhood status - rewards eg ‘mother’s cross’ given bronze, silver, gold dending on amount of children.
SLOGAN = ‘I have donated a child to the Fuhrer’
What was introduced in 1935 to improve ‘raical standards’?
Lebensborn - Aryan girls impregnated by SS & unmarried mothers cared for - 11k children from this.
Were all these policies for women and family successful?
Birth rate increased but this may have been due to end of depression
status of women increased - role of mothers seen as important
