Women Flashcards
Point
Women are significantly impacted by socio-economic inequalities due to what is known as the gender pay gap.
Explain
The gender pay gap is the average difference between the remuneration for men and women who are working. The gender pay gap in Scotland remains at around 10%, meaning women earn 90p for every £1 earned by men. This results in a higher likelihood of poverty for women, who often have to manage low household budgets and go without necessities.
Example
For example, in 2021, women that worked full time earned 6.6% less than their male counterparts.
Analysis
This means they continually face barriers to advance, particularly in senior management and board-level positions which contributes to their economic dependency and vulnerability to abuse.
Point
Furthermore, women are significantly impacted by socio-economic inequalities due to their likelihood to be employed in the 5 C’s - catering, caring, cleaning, checkouts and clerical work.
Explain
This is because these jobs are seen as ‘women’s work’. A significant number of women are employed in sectors like health and social care, retail, admin, and support services and food services.
Example
It can clearly be argued that not only are these sectors usually low paid, but some are also where massive amounts of their workers are in increasing poverty such as Amin and support services whose poverty rate recently increased to 23%.
Analysis
This shows that because women are underrepresented on boards of their UK’s largest companies, holding only 35% of board positions and mainly being employed in low paid sectors results in inequalities towards women.
Link
Overall, due to the gender pay gap where men earn 42% more than women in banking and finance, and also being unable to work due to expectations to look after the family or home, results in women being victims to social inequalities.
