Ethnicity Flashcards
Point
Minority ethnic groups are also significantly impacted by socio-economic inequalities in the UK particularly when it comes to employment and pay.
Explain
Ethnic minorities often face higher rates of unemployment, poverty, and overcrowded living conditions despite legal conditions against discrimination.
Example
This is illustrated by the pay gap between ethnic groups and their British counterparts. Pakistani employees earn 16.9% less, Bangladeshi employees earning 15.1% less, and Black African employees earning 8.3% less that White British employees.
Analysis
This clearly proves that a difference in education, occupation, industry, location, and discrimination in the labour market results in an unfair bias towards the White British.
Point
However, the inequalities faced by minority ethnic groups are not limited to those faced in employment. Minority ethnic groups are also disproportionately impacted by hate crime in Scotland and the UK.
Explain
This is because institutional racism has severely affected minorities in Scotland. In society, ethnic groups have been unfairly treated despite laws out in place. Racial hate crime is the most reported type of hate crime in Scotland affecting all of those in minority groups.
Example
For instance, between 2021-2022, there were 3,107 charged related to racial hate crime.
Analysis
This suggests that the higher number of these cases can result in emotional damage and long term trauma. It can destroy lives and change their lifestyle/identities in order to avoid these crimes, resulting in a negative socio-economic impact.
Link
Overall this shows that due to racial hate crime increasing by a shocking 73% in 2021, the impact of socioeconomic inequalities on ethnic minorities is critical.
