Henry recognised Catherine’s support and had to tread carefully making it hard to annul without papal approval
Catherine begged the king to not cast her aside this made it hard for Henry to make a convincing case
Steps of the annulment from Wolsey
1527 henry told wolsey to persuade pope clement to grant the annulment on the ground the marriage was ungodly
Pope was reluctant to grant the annulment as he did not want to offend Charles v whose troops were close to Rome
1528 wolsey proposed he would rule on the case with pope representative cardinal cappeggio
This failed as campaggio dragged out the proceedings
July 1529 the case was adjourned without a decision being made
