War Hawks
A name given to members of Congress who wanted war with Britain; they thought the war would increase the size of the country.
Andrew Jackson
War of 1812 general who became the 7th president of the US, responsible for the Indian Removal Act and changing American Democracy.
Battle of New Orleans
The British attacked Andrew Jackson’s forces and the US won the most convincing battle of the War of 1812
Treaty of Ghent
Treaty between the US and Britain, ending the War of 1812 in December 1814
Monroe Doctrine
Declared “hands off the Western Hemisphere”; North and South America were off limits to European colonization.
American System
Proposed by Henry Clay, a plan for raising tariffs to pay for internal improvements (roads, etc.) Congress opposed it because they felt the Constitution did not authorize federal government to spend money on internal improvements.
Capitalism
An economical system in which private businesses own and operate most industries and determine the cost of good and workers’ pay.
Lowell System
Developed by mill owner Francis Cabot Lowell, where single female workers were house; he combined both Spinning and weaving unda one roof.
