US system of government in which the power is distributed between a central authority and individual states.
Federalism
Listed the basic rights of the people and the right to revolt against the king.
Declaration of Independence
Plan for government proposed at the Constitutional Convention in which the national government would have three branches - representation would be determined by population.
Virginia Plan
Proposal to create a unicameral (one house) government; rejected at the Constitutional convention.
New Jersey Plan
Agreement worked out at the Constitutional Convention establishing that the state’s population would determine representation in the lower house of the legislature, while each state would have equal representation in the upper house of the legislature.
Great Compromise
Division of government that proposes bills and passes bills into law’s.
Legislative Branch
Division of government that includes the president and the administrative departments, enforces the laws.
Executive Branch
Division of government that is made up of the national courts, interprets laws, punishes criminals and settle disputes between the states.
Judicial Branch
A series of essays that defends the US Constitution and tried to reassure Americans that the states would not be overpowered by the federal government.
Federalist Papers
Agreement worked out at the Constitutional Convention that said that slaves would be counted as 3/5ths of a person when determining the state’s population in the lower house of Congress.
