Open Systems Interconnection OSI Model
- Physical - defines physical specifications of the network, data: bits
- Data Link - where LAN and ethernet are defined, concerned with data delivery, data: frames
- Network - responsible for determining the best route to a destination, data: packets

- Session - responsibility of establishing, maintaining, and terminating sessions
