Corporal Punishment
Physical punishment inflicted upon the body of someone. Historically, corporal punishment was licit, and widely used against a variety of groups, including wives, slaves, employmees, soldiers, and servants. Corporal punishment of children remains legal in North America
Familicide
The murder of one’s spouse and at least one of one’s children
Family-class Immigrants
according to Canadian immigration law, family-class immigrants are those who come to Canada through sponsorship by a spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, parent, or other eligible relative
Femicide
literally, this means the murder of a woman. Scholars generally use it to refer to a killing that targets someone because she is female, those who use the term wary in the breadth of their definitions
Gender Symmetry
in studies of intimate-partner violence, gender symmetry refers to the concept of relative ‘balance’ in woman-to-man and man-to-woman vioelnce.
Homicide
the killing of a human being by another; both murder and manslaughter are forms of homicide
Homosexual Panic
a purported state of psychotic rage brought on by recieving unwanted homosexual advances. Homosexual panic has been successfully used as a defence against criminal charges in a variety of nations
‘Honor’ Killing
family murder, often involving multi-party collusion or multiple perpetrators. These murders target someone, almost always a girl or woman, perceived to have brought shame unpon the family.
Intimate-Partner Violence
Physical, sexual and emotional abuse or threats directed against an intimate partner, whether in a marital or non-marital relationship. IPV may occur within heterosexual or non-heterosexual relationships
Patriarchal Violence
Bell hook’s term for family violence ‘based on the belief that it is acceptable for a more powerful individual to control others through various forms of coercive violence.’ Hooks links this idea to male domination, but notes that women can and do enact patriarchal violence, particularly against children.
Rape
Penile penetration without consent
Sexual Assault
any form of sexual touching without consent. Canada’s Criminal Code distinguishes among categories of sexual assault based on degrees parallel to the degrees of common assault
Sexual-Minority
A discriptor for anyone whose sexual orientation, gender idtentity, or seual identity differs from that of the majority culture
Stalking
Under Canadian law, a form of criminal harassment involving some combination of repeatedly following a person, watching a person, communicating with aperson when such communication is not desired, and threatening a person either directly or by proxy
