Q

How do you make colourless components visible in TLC?

A

Plates can have a fluorescent dye that shines when UV shines on it. The dots will cover the dye and won’t glow so you can see them.

You can also expose them to iodine vapour which sticks to the chemicals on the plate and show up as purple spots.
