What is the endocrine system?
Consists of glands that produce hormones, that target specific things in the body.
What is a hormone?
-A chemical substance
-Synthesised and secreted by a specific gland
-Secreted in small amounts into the bloodstream
-Acts at a site distant from the site of secretion
-Acts on specific receptors to give a specific physiological effect.
Name some classical endocrine glands of the body.
-Pituitary
-Hypothalamus
-Thymus
-Adrenals
-Ovaries (female)
-Thyroid
-Pancreas
-Testes (Male)
What do Hormones do?
They play a part in:
1) Reproduction
2) Growth and Development
3) Maintenance in the internal environment
4) Regulation of digestion and energy availability
What are the 4 classifications of hormones?
-Proteins
-Peptides
-Amino Acid derivatives
-Lipids and Steroids
How do hormones act on target cells?
-Act on specific receptors
-Regulate the activity of the target cell
-Mechanism of action depends on nature of hormone.
